Published annually by the Copernicus Marine Service, the Ocean State Report provides a comprehensive assessment of the state of the global ocean based on satellite observations, in situ measurements, and ocean reanalysis data.
This year’s edition highlights how ocean science is essential for understanding ongoing changes in the ocean, their impacts on ecosystems and societies, and how this knowledge can support adaptation and resilience. It emphasizes both 𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘬𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘭𝘦𝘥𝘨𝘦 – understanding what is happening and why – and 𝘰𝘤𝘦𝘢𝘯 𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯, which builds on that knowledge to inform decisions, protect communities, and strengthen climate resilience.
We are proud that researchers from ObsSea4Clim have contributed five articles to this milestone 10th edition, covering important aspects of ocean health:
🐻❄️ Ocean changes and impacts in the Polar Regions
🏝️ Ocean change in Small Island Developing States
🌊 Freshening of the Barents Sea and its impact on dense water outflow
🔍 Establishing a monitoring approach for marine heatwaves in the Black and Mediterranean Seas
🌡️ Mediterranean Sea warming and marine heatwaves in 2024
Together, these studies address some of the most pressing ocean and climate challenges of our time, from accelerating marine heatwaves and polar change to shifts in ocean circulation and impacts on vulnerable communities. They also demonstrate the value of sustained ocean observations for transforming data into actionable climate knowledge.
