New deliverable: Requirements for Ocean Transport Estimates!
Ocean transport is the process by which water, heat, salt and other substances are transported within the ocean, both horizontally and vertically, from one region to another. It regulates regional and global climate by transporting heat from lower to higher latitudes; it sustains marine ecosystems by transporting essential nutrients and planktonic organisms, and it is important for distributing oxygen and carbon dioxide to the deep ocean.
Our new deliverable assesses existing regional ocean transport observing systems maintained or used by the project partners GEOMAR Helmholtz-Zentrum für Ozeanforschung Kiel, Maynooth University, Faroe Marine Research Institute – Havstovan, CSIC, CMCC Foundation – Centro Euro Mediterraneo sui Cambiamenti Climatici and Nansen Environmental and Remote Sensing Center (NERSC) and contributes to the Rolling Review of Requirements (RRR) framework set out by the World Meteorological Organization.

The observing requirements of the systems and the approaches of the nations are reviewed with respect to the capabilities of the observing systems to provide Essential Ocean Variables and Essential Climate Variables requested by users. The deliverable also provides recommendations on how observing systems can be improved by introducing new technology, combining data from several platforms, expanding to become multi-purpose observing systems, and complementing them with reanalysis products.
