ObsSea4Clim is contributing to two exciting sessions at the Ocean Best Practices System Workshop (OBPS VIII) in October 2024 under the overarching theme “Stimulating Ocean Best Practices”. The objective of the OBPS workshop is to facilitate the cross-cutting primary role of best practices in operational oceanography by promoting dialogues across science and technology.

The workshop is conducted online and participation is free of charge!

See details of both sessions below – full programme of the individual sessions will be posted soon.

Meanwhile, read more about the OBPS workshop and register to participate.

16 October 2024

15:00-16:30 (CEST)

Title: The WMO Rolling Review of Requirements and application areas for Essential Ocean Variables and Essential Climate Variables

What to expect: The ambition of ObsSea4Clim is to deliver an improved, standardized framework for sustainable ocean observation and demonstrate
the functioning of a sustainable ocean observation system. The goal is to support regional and global climate assessments, projections and actionable indicators for a sustainable development, and to develop best practices and
standards for interoperable in-situ but also satellite ocean observing.

This session will present and discuss our approach to working with RRR and EOV/ECVs framework, integrating best practices and standards, and how the work with the application areas will be implemented in the next 4 years.

The session will feature a series of ‘elevator pitch’ 10-minute presentations, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.

17 October 2024

17:00-18:30 (CEST)

Title: Ocean-Climate Nexus – Importance of Ocean Observing for Tipping Points

What to expect: This session is organized in collaboration with TipESM, OCEAN:ICE, and ClimTip projects. The session will reflect on the importance of international science collaboration and the use of experiment protocols jointly agreed upon by the community.
Individual speakers will focus on specific aspects within their expertise, but together these presentations will provide a coherent overview of the interconnectedness and complexity of the ocean and climate on the global scale.

The session will feature a series of ‘elevator pitch’ 10-minute presentations, followed by a panel discussion and Q&A.
