Did you miss it? Watch ObsSea4Clim’s contributions to the Satellite Event ‘Monitoring the Ocean’

The Satellite Event ‘Monitoring the Ocean’ took place on 8 April in Barcelona, Spain, as part of the Ocean Decade Week. The event was hosted by ICM – Institute of Marine Sciences, and was co-organised by TipESM, with the participation of projects GHRSST, OCEAN:ICE, ObsSea4Clim and Clim4Cities.

The event brought together experts from different areas of climate and marine science to unpack the importance of monitoring the ocean – from satellites and in-situ observations – for predicting changes in the Earth system and the climate. Together, experts gave inputs from their domains followed by a panel discussion with inputs from the audience.

ObsSea4Clim presentations

ObsSea4Clim contributed with two presentations, which you can now re-watch in our YouTube channel, and below:

Ana Oliveira, from ObsSea4Clim partner +ATLANTIC, is an earth observation (EO) researcher specializing in Machine Learning (ML)-based applications for climate change hazard mapping and impact assessment. As part of the panel discussion, she presented the following topic: From climate science to decision-making: how policymakers & final users benefit from research

Chiara Bearzotti, from the Danish Meteorological Institute’s Project Office, is responsible for project management and complicance for ObsSea4Clim as well as projects OCEAN:ICE, TipESM. As part of the panel discussion, she presented the following topic: Complementarity of ocean observations (in situ) for monitoring the ocean from the ocean?

Panelists

The panel was moderated by Cristina González Haro (ICM-CSIC, Teledetect, GHRSST, ICATMAR). The full panel included the following talks and experts:

  • ESA Earth Observation for Ocean Sciences and Climate by Roberto Sabia (European Space Agency – ESA)
  • Complementarity of ocean observations (in situ) for monitoring the ocean from the ocean? by Chiara Bearzotti (OCEAN:ICE, ObsSea4Clim, Danish Meteorological Institute)
  • Improving the predictability of climate tipping points, ENSO prediction and disease models with an enhanced ocean-observing system by Xavier Rodo (ISGlobal, TipESM)
  • How can supercomputers aid in modeling and what are the current and future challenges of HPC for weather, ocean, and climate, supported by ESiWACE? by Mario Acosta (Barcelona Supercomputing Center – BSC)
  • Monitoring the ocean, a regional perspective from Catalonia by Jordi Isern Fontanet (ICM-CSIC, ICATMAR)
  • From Climate Science to Decision-making: how policymakers and final users can benefit from research outcomes by Ana Oliveira (+Atlantic, ObsSea4Clim, GHRSST)

Exhibition: Behind the scenes: Monitoring the Ocean

After the panel discussion, attendees could explore a photo exhibition from ‘Behind the Scenes’ of activities, research projects and fieldwork focused on monitoring the health of the ocean.
